A psychologist you can trust

With extensive experience across NHS and private settings, Dr Connolly provides thorough, compassionate assessments that give individuals and families the clarity they need.

Dr John Connolly is a Clinical and Health Psychologist with extensive experience assessing and working with children, young people, and adults with neurodevelopmental difficulties, including ADHD, across a range of clinical settings.

He understands that seeking a private assessment is a significant decision. His approach is thorough, evidence-based, and always person-centred — taking time to understand each individual in the context of their whole life, rather than reducing them to a checklist of symptoms.

Assessments are conducted in accordance with NICE guideline NG87 and draw on information from multiple sources to build a complete picture. Every assessment results in a comprehensive written report suitable for use with GPs, employers, schools, local authorities, and other professionals.

Dr Connolly is committed to providing accessible, high-quality assessments to individuals and families across North Wales who are looking for answers.

Understanding how you think and learn

In some cases, a cognitive assessment can add important clinical depth to an ADHD assessment, or may be recommended as a standalone addition.

What it involves

A standardised assessment of intellectual ability, processing speed, working memory, and other cognitive domains using validated tools appropriate for the individual's age.

When it helps

Particularly useful where there are concerns about learning difficulties alongside ADHD, significant differences between ability areas, or where evidence is needed for an IDP, exam access arrangements, or workplace adjustments.

What you receive

Results are integrated into the main psychological report, providing a clear cognitive profile of strengths and areas of difficulty, with practical recommendations for school, work, and daily life.

Cognitive assessment is available as an addition to the standard ADHD assessment. Additional fees apply and will be confirmed in writing before any work proceeds. All fees are payable in full in advance.

Transparent pricing, no surprises

All fees are confirmed before any work begins. Full payment is required in advance. Payment details are provided at the point of booking.

Questions people often ask

The assessment typically takes place over one appointment lasting 2–3 hours in total. This includes the clinical interview and the individual session. Assessments that include cognitive testing may require a second appointment. You will be advised of the likely duration at the time of booking.
Dr Connolly will provide a clear clinical opinion on whether the presentation is consistent with ADHD, based on all available information. The report explains the findings and the reasoning behind them. It is important to understand that a psychological report provides a clinical opinion — if medication is indicated, this would need to be discussed with and prescribed by a GP or psychiatrist.
Yes. The report is a professional psychological document suitable for use with schools, the local authority, GPs, employers, and other professionals. In Wales it can support applications for an Individual Development Plan (IDP), Additional Learning Provision (ALP), exam access arrangements, and reasonable workplace adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.
In Wales, the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) used in England has been replaced by the Individual Development Plan (IDP) under the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Act 2018. The IDP is the statutory plan setting out the additional learning provision a child or young person requires. Dr Connolly's reports are written with Welsh schools and local authorities in mind and are appropriate for use in IDP applications.
Not at all. Many adults reach adulthood without ever receiving a diagnosis, often having developed coping strategies that masked their difficulties for years. An assessment at any age can provide valuable clarity, open doors to the right support, and if medication is appropriate, allow that conversation to happen with your GP. It is never too late to seek answers.
Yes — ADHD must be assessed across more than one setting, so information from school is a clinically essential part of the process. A separate questionnaire pack is provided for the class teacher and/or ALNCo to complete and return. If school information is not received in time, the assessment may proceed but this will be clearly noted as a limitation in the report.
Simply send an email to doctorjohnconnolly@outlook.com with a brief description of your concerns and — for a child's assessment — their age. Dr Connolly will respond within 2 working days to discuss availability and next steps. Once an appointment date is agreed, the pre-assessment pack will be sent to you to complete before the appointment.
